CHAPTER SIXTEEN
PRESENT DAY
âYouâre getting burned.â Miles studied my shoulders as he moved past me in the pool, the volleyball in his hand.
âWhatever. You just want me to get out so you guys will actually win.â
ââCause they canât win fair and square.â Eric threw an arm around my shoulder, grinning proudly.
âArenât you down by four points right now?â Miles grinned, moving back to take his place next to James, who winked at me.
âOnly because you cheated with that last one.â Eric released me, moving back into position.
âYeah, you keep thinking that.â
âThe line is here.â Eric pointed to the filter. âWe agreed.â
âHe didnât go over the line.â James was playfully defensive.
âHe one-hundred-percent did.â
âOh, donât be a sore loser.â Miles tossed the ball into the air and caught it.
âWhatever, next time itâs out, there are no redos.â I narrowed my gaze at him.
âDonât worry about that. Iâm all warmed up now. Ready to kick some butt.â This time, when Miles tossed the ball into the air, he spiked it in my direction. I leaped into the air and smacked it back.
âAttagirl!â Eric beamed, knocking the ball back to them when James hit it our way.
I moved as the ball spun toward me in the air, placing myself under it and jumping to spike it back their way.
âGot it!â Miles moved for it at the same time as James, but they both hesitated, then reached, their fingers seconds too late as it splashed into the water.
âYes!â Eric scooped me up, spinning us around in circles with a triumphant cry. âHell yes!â
âIs it time to switch teams yet?â James groaned.
âYou just want my star player.â Eric placed me down. âSheâs all mine.â
âStar playerâs a bit of a stretch. She got lucky.â Miles pursed his lips, his competitive side on full display.
I stuck my tongue out at him. âYou werenât saying that last time when I was on your team.â
âItâs different in the water.â He grabbed the ball, tucking it under his arm and against his waist.
âExcuses, excuses.â I wrung out my hair, my wrist brushing my shoulder and sending a pang of pain across my skin. I winced and glanced down at the sunburn Miles had warned me about.
âWhere are you going? You arenât getting away that easily,â Miles called, chasing me as I moved through the pool on my way toward the steps. âWeâve still gotta make our comeback.â
âIâm going to reapply sunscreen.â I waved him off. âIâll be right back. Wait for me.â I climbed out of the pool. âDoes anyone need anything while Iâm inside?â
All three men shook their heads, watching as I made my way across the deck and wrapped a towel around myself, drying my shoulders before heading for the house.
Inside, the cool air was painful to my warm skin, spreading goose bumps across my body. Once dry, I reapplied the sunscreen to my shoulders and face, and I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. I tapped my phone screen before exiting and froze at the sight of the notification on my screen.
